Propane and Electric Operation
This RV water heater offers versatility with its dual power source capabilities, allowing it to operate on propane, electric, or a combination of both for an improved recovery rate. When using propane gas, a propane-fired burner routes heat through a passage in the tank, transferring the heat to the water stored in the tank. Alternatively, the electric option uses a 120V AC heating element to heat the water, much like a traditional household water heater. This model features an automatic spark ignition system, also known as a direct spark ignition (DSI), making it easy to operate. To start the heater, simply ensure that it is filled with water and flip the switch. A 12V DC connection is required to power the control board and igniter.
XT Mixing Valve
The added feature of the XT Mixing Valve delivers up to 50% more hot water without increasing the size or adding weight. The valve utilizes a pre-set thermostat set at 155°F to regulate the temperature of the water, ensuring that it remains safe and consistent. In an exothermal mixing valve, the temperature of the hot water is monitored, and if it exceeds a certain threshold, the valve will automatically mix in cold water to reduce the temperature and prevent scalding. This technology uses the heat from the hot water to regulate the temperature, providing a more efficient and effective method of temperature control.
Aluminum Tank
The lightweight aluminum material makes it easier to handle and reduces the added weight to your RV. Unlike porcelain-lined steel tanks, an aluminum tank does not require an anode rod for protection, simplifying maintenance. The aluminum material also offers a longer lifespan due to its resistance to corrosion. Additionally, aluminum is a good conductor of heat, leading to more efficient heating.
Electric Ignition
The electric ignition eliminates the hassle of manual lighting of your water heater. The electric ignition utilizes a control board that sends an electrical signal to the igniter, which then creates a spark to ignite the propane burner. Simply flip the switch (not included) to start the water heater, making it more convenient and easier to use.

    Great upgrade

Posted by Kelly on Jul 9th 2025

My Atwood 5-gallon water heater tank finally failed. Atwood was bought out by Dometic, and then production was discontinued. There are no rectangular water heaters on the market. I had a choice of going smaller and adding metal fillers or larger and cutting the hole bigger. I chose to cut the hole bigger, and I'm glad I did. The Dometic was almost a plug-and-play. The Atwood was hardwired, and the new Dometic was a plug-in style. So all I had to do was take the old wires and connect/install a new 15A GFCI outlet. I went from a 5-gallon tank that barely made it through an on-off shower to having enough hot water to take a full shower without turning on and off. If I choose to have an on-off shower, I could still get some dishes washed right after. The XT is Dometic quick reaheat water heater and it matches Dometic reatheat claim for a 10gal tank to act like a 16gal water heater. It definitely reheats the water quickly with both gas and electric running. The cost of this water heater is up there for a tanked version, but it's worth the cost with the quick reheats. If you are a full-timer in cold weather or boondocking, a tanked heater is your only option, and this one gets you close to an at-home quick shower. Low-end tankless water heaters are about the same cost, but they waste a lot of water and require an antifreeze setup, which still cannot keep the water at your desired temperature when the weather starts dipping below the 40s.
